How to Make Friends at University

Going to university can be a nerve-wrecking experience, as there’s so much to think about. In amongst this, there is the pressure to make friends. Here at We Buy Any House, we have compiled our top tips on how to make friends at university.

Join an Online Group Before University Starts:

Perhaps one of the most daunting aspects of going to university is the notion that you are going to be living away from home and will inevitably have to make friends. However, a lot of universities offer you the chance to prepare for this ahead of time before you get to university. Most universities will have group pages which have been set up before any freshers start. This way, you can get to know people beforehand in plenty of time, as there is usually no deadline to join a group. These groups usually discuss activities, dorm arrangements and what upcoming fresher events are on the horizon. It’s a great way to break the ice and get to know the people who you are going to be living with for the foreseeable future.

Sign Up for Clubs and Societies Beforehand:

Thankfully, most universities have something for everyone in terms of activities and societities. All of your interests are usually organised by an events club or a society, in which you can go and meet like-minded people, enjoy said activity and find friends while at university. Even better, most of these societities in the UK are free- and if you become a serious member the only thing you may have to pay for is the uniform or trips away.

Attending Faculty Events:

While it’s all well and good going to the social aspects of your university, it’s also a good idea to get involved with any faculty events that are going on. This is because although you want to make friends outside of university, you will be spending a lot of time in class, studying alongside people and potentially working in groups with your peers. Considering most university courses range from 3 to 7 years, it’s a good idea to make friends and network on your course.

Try Activities Outside of Your Comfort Zone:

Although freshersis the perfect time to make friends in a social group that you love, it’s also a good idea to try something new. Get out of your comfort zone and begin doing activities or social groups that are a bit out there. Whether you’ve always had the desire to join a debate group or begin a sport that’s been of interest, now is the perfect time.

Remember Everybody is on the Same Boat:

Sometimes it can be easy to get swept up in the anxiety of new things- and the potential of how things are going to be. It’s important to remember that everyone at university is in the same boat, and probably feels just as nervous as you do. Therefore, starting that chat with someone may be the thing you both need to just do!
